Head Coach 'David Baker' Football Journey

My name is David Baker and I am the founder / head coach of GKS. I wanted to write a piece to help people understand my football journey and how unexpected events can always stop your progression.

I started playing at a young age as an outfield player originally and started playing in goal at the age of 11. As I started the position at a later age I developed my skills in the the lower district leagues for Aylesford FC in Kent.Whilst at Aylesford I had the opportunity to train at Soccer Elite under Scott Chalmer-Stevens (Now PSA, Kent) who is a very talented hard working coach who helped me develop and earn the opportunities to play against other Academies in the professional game.

During my youth career I played for Maidstone Utd, Ebbsfleet & Tonbridge Angels which has given me the privilege of working with other talented coaches such as Ron Hillyard a Gillingham FC legend.

Unfortunately due to a bad road accident I had to stop playing at 18 as I was experiencing recurring injuries and became a student of the game. I have since gone on to have a successful coaching career in such a short period of time working with notable coaches such as Darren Hare, Alan Walker, Kevin Green, Andy Hessenthaler, Kris Browning and others along the way.

A few years ago there was a real need at my club Montpelier Villa FC to have some Goalkeeping coaching for the youth setup and 1st team. Since becoming a coach I had focused on understanding the whole game but after a few sessions it became clear that all the Goalkeepers found the sessions useful and wanted more.

What I have noticed is there are many coaches teaching various techniques from different cultures of Football. I teach the game as I would want to learn it and try to keep things as simple as possible whilst teaching techniques to make your all round game better. I have a great passion for Goalkeeping and the time I have lost I try to put into helping my players grow and develop in the game. Over the last season I have started to see a noticeable improvement in our Goalkeepers.

This has led me to taking on the role of 1st Team Goalkeeper coach at Whitehawk FC last season and thank Jude McDonald for getting me on board. Jude is a great coach with a very bright future in the game.

I am not out here to say I am better than the rest but what I can promise is I know through feedback that my sessions are effective and high intensity to help improve your game. If you currently are looking for a coach that is good value for money then email us at

On another note I will be returning to the game from next season so any clubs in Sussex County looking for a Goalkeeper please get in touch!

Thanks for reading and please keep an eye out on my social media for more updates and exciting training videos.
